Handmade Holiday – Stockings and Santa Sacks
Years ago I bought some beautiful velvety Christmas stockings and held on to them. When it was just my husband and I we just used some fun stockings I had but I hoped that one day we’d have a family and I’d have matching stockings to fill each year.
After years of infertility treatments, I stuck them in a box and put them in the attic. They were a reminder each Christmas of our struggles. At the time I was working for hospice and decided I needed a change. I needed to see the beginning of life and take a break from getting a daily dose of the end of life.
My husband’s grandmother grew up in a local orphanage and it just so happened they had a job opening in my field. I applied and within 3 weeks started a new job. Within 2 years I had left that job to adopt our son. It wasn’t the journey I expected or the result I was looking for but I fell in love with a little boy who was at the time living in one of the group homes on our campus.
Five years later he shares our last name and all of our love. When I got our stockings out this year I noticed they had really taken a beating over the years. There were lots of threads and tears around the seams. Now I will take some responsibility for that because I fill them full and my two guys tend to be peekers!

It’s a constant fight of, “Are you poking your stocking again?!” for the entire month of December. I am very guilty of going overboard for Christmas. Our son is now 17 years old and I’m still desperately trying to make up for the first 12 years of his life that he didn’t have gifts under the tree or big family Christmas dinners. So yeah, I filled those stockings so full and enjoy every single second of it.
Where am I going with this? It’s time for new stockings! I can retire these for something new for our family to have next Christmas in our new home and I’m excited!
So let me share with ya’ll some of the favorites that I found on Etsy while I was on my search! Each photograph is from a different Etsy shop so if you see something you like be sure you click directly on that picture.
Every year I have at least 1 gift under the tree that looks like it’s been mauled by a bear! Paper in multiple directions, so much tape it takes a knife to get it reopened. Just so misshaped and crazy I can’t help but laugh so this year I ordered a few Santa sacks just to keep on hand. They are perfect! Here are a few of my favorites!
Thank you for stopping by and allowing me to share some of these great items with you and as always thank you for shopping and supporting small and handmade businesses.
