$5 Centerpiece – Dollar Tree and Goodwill finds

I tend to like simple decor. I like free decor even better!  While this didn’t end up being free I did go frugal while grabbing just a few great pieces from Goodwill and the Dollar Tree. A few times a year a few of the budget-friendly Youtube ladies do a Goodwill Decor collab and you can only spend $5. It’s always so fun to see what they come up with.

I’ve found some of my favorite accents pieces at our local Goodwill.  I really love glassware because there are just so many things I can do with it.  If I can get a glass or jar at Goodwill for .25 and bring it home to jazz up I’m usually pretty excited. This also allows me to say if it gets broken for a quarter or a dollar I will not lose my mind. I say this because I’m a boy mom and somethings tend to have short lifespans around here! As I sit here typing my son is cleaning his room up and I just heard a crash.

Me: “What was that?”

Son: “The lamp”

Me: “Broken?”

Son: “No chance for revival. Don’t come in here.”

Me: *Side eye the hubby*

Hubby: I’m going *sigh*

Needless to say, I was pretty excited when I found these two pieces at Goodwill for just two dollars.

It took me longer to get the tags and tape off these pieces then it did to shop for them but it was still worth it.

The Dollar Tree is close by so I thought I’d pop in there for some spider webs because my original plan was to make a Halloween centerpiece but I quickly realized by looking around at the fairly empty shelves Halloween was a week away and it was time for me to just think Thanksgiving. I picked up these two glass pumpkins and cute haybale.  Let me start by saying this. Open your little haybale up outside if you get one. Give it a good shake before bringing it into.  Just trust me on this one.

The board it’s sitting on is always on our table. It’s a lazy susan my husband built for us. We play a lot of board games around here so our board sits on top and we just spin it around to whomever’s turn it is. It’s handy for game night and always works nicely for a centerpiece stand. So after spending $3 at Dollar Tree and $2 at Goodwill, I went looking for a few extra fall touches. Outside!

Now I realize that not everyone has fresh cotton around there house. However, here in North Carolina, it’s not unusual depending on where you live so I grabbed a handful of raw cotton and put in the glass dome. After the farmer does his harvest there are always a few strays and broken ones blowing around.  If I hadn’t seen the cotton I would have just filled that with glittered pinecones.

I grabbed my bag and went on the search for pine cones, leaves, and acorns.  It is still pretty warm here most days but we are finally having a few days mixed in that feel like fall. However, with that said I wasn’t very lucky at finding a lot of leaves that weren’t completely still green or pinecones that had fallen. I did find enough to accomplish what I wanted.

Let me start by telling you that if an acorn has a hole in it toss it out. Once you take it inside a little bug will come out of that hole and you don’t want that in your house.

Take the acorns your planning on using in the house and rinse them off in water then pop them in the oven at 350 for 20 minutes. You will have a few split and some will lose their tops but this is an easy fix with a dab of glue.  I also tossed my few pinecones on the cookie sheet. It tends to open them up and rids them of any little bugs that might be in them.

After everything cooled I filled up my jar with a handful of acorns and took a few to my office for a little glitter.

I couldn’t find the Mod Podge when I was ready to make these so I went with trusty Elmers glue and a Q-Tip. I lightly spread glue over the base of the acorn and tips of the pinecones and dipped them in some glitter I had.  Cute, quick and just a little pop of extra color for my jar. I even spread a light layer of glitter on the leaves and sprinkled a little glitter on those as well.

I threw some green bulbs I had on my Halloween display in the jar as well and while I’m not 100% I’m happy with those they added a little color and I’m more than happy with my $5 display.
